The GHMC elections results announced this Friday has shocked everyone. Bhartiya Janata Party that had won only 4 seats in the last election, won 48 seats this time, making a big mark for itself. Ruling party TRS led by KCR won 55 seats, closely followed by AIMIM lead by Owaisi that won 44 seats, leaving the elections in a hung state. Although BJP doesn’t have the required majority to form the government, the increase in votes could influence the political dynamics in Hyderabad and Andhra Pradesh in the coming times in a big way.
The local body elections drew much attention this time with all parties fighting real hard for the win. The GHMC body in Hyderabad, known as Owaisi’s stronghold, saw BJP campaign this hard for the elections for the first time ever. All the big leaders including BJP’s central leader Amit Shah, national president Jagatprakash Nadda and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath campaigned for this election.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath spoke about changing the name of the Hyderabad city to Bhagyanagar. Yogi had said, ‘Those who live in India do not take the name of India in their oath. This incident shows what the real face of Owaisi’s AIMIM is. We have changed the name of Faizabad to Ayodhya, and the name of Allahabad to Prayagraj. Hyderabad, known as Bhagyanagar in ancient times, is a symbol of our culture. So why can its name not be changed back to Bhagyanagar?’ His statement garnered much attention during the entire campaign phase of the election.
Fact of the matter is that these election results have been quite important for the BJP. BJP has never seen such success in any election in Southern India other than the ones held in the state of Karnataka. This is the first time that the BJP contested this election in the name of hindutva, nationalism and development, proving that this philosophy resonates well with the people of Hyderabad.
With the current results, TRS will have to depend on AIMIM to form the government, proving that TRS is hand-in-glove with Owaisi and his political philosophy. The BJP is slated to gain from all of this and can expect good support on its hindutva and nationalism agendas.
Only time will tell whether results of GHMC elections in Hyderabad could spoil the fate of many ruling parties in South India but they’re sure to change the fate of BJP in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
